SYNOPSIS: In the series of short films 24 Portraits, Alain Cavalier registers women who have dedicated their lives to manual crafts and collects images and testimonies from a labor world in danger of extinction through zooms of faces, hands, gestures and objects. Potential Fragments of Works to Unfold Fractal and Cyclical takes the idea of manual work representation, but in the artistic production. Here, we can see the actions, methods and ways of seeing of Ana, a visual artist, who is at the beginning of the creation of new artworks. The camera registers her strong relation with the objects and how she compiles them or how she intends to manipulate them without a clear idea on how they will be used: if they will be the starting point or the final product of her artistic production. This is an observational video on the habitus at the beginning of a creative process. On one hand, the video shows images of Ana and her objects along with her thoughts (texts). The artist is influenced by the ideas of Georges Perec, who encouraged people to find their own “anthropology” to talk and write about objects and to find us in the objects of the others. And, on the other hand, the video takes the idea of Arjun Appadurai, who uses the term “the social life of things” to refer to the uses, forms and trajectories of the objects, which in the case of Ana are connected to the programmed obsolescence (the celluloid in Super 8 film), or with the extinction of nature (the dead bees).
